Chef contestant, Eitan Bernath competes during a segment, as seen on Food Network’s Chopped, Season 21.

Believe to or not, as some of you might know, I competed on “Chopped”. Yes the one on Food Network. It airred on Tuesday, September 30 2014 at 10 PM Eastern Time. The episode that I was on is called “Short Order Cooks”.

So here is how it all happened…….

The wife of one of my dad’s college friends emailed my mom a casting announcement that had already been forwarded to several other people. Some how even though I have never met this woman she knew from speaking with my mom that I love to cook so she sent the email my way.

My mom and I filled out the application in December just on a whim but never seriously thought I would be called for a phone interview. Well I was and it went so well that before I knew it they asked me to come into the city to the casting agency office.

So during January break while the world was away and vacationing, me and my mom went into the city to the Chopped casting agency offices. There I had a quick interview and was taped in front of the camera. My mom was bumming because she wasn’t allowed to join me but had to wait in a hallway on a little couch.

Less than half an hour later I was done. I walked out and the first thing I said to my mom was “ I am going to be on Chopped!” I can’t explain but I simply knew.

Well things moved slowly for the next few weeks. I had more phone interviews and lots of emails back and forth with many different producers. You can’t believe what goes into planning a single episode. Since they had never had chefs so young, they wanted everything to be perfect.

The entire time my family and I could tell no one even when a camera crew came to my house twice to film me. It was really hard but any leaks would have gotten me disqualified.

When I got the final email in March confirming I was chosen from thousands of applicants, I was super excited. I was going to be on my favorite show Chopped! I think my parents were in shock.

Though I did not win, it was an incredible experience. The people were so nice and really made all us kids feel comfortable.  I would do it again in a heartbeat.
